If you want to play DOTA 2 like a pro, there are some basic things to learn before pulling up a guide on what to build. In sports as in eSports, each game has some fundamental mechanics and skills every player needs to learn if they hope to excel at the game. In DOTA 2 players need gold if they want to get items for those important stat boosts and to get gold players need to get the killing blow on the creeps that march through each lane to the opponents Ancient. Early on players focus hard on harassing the other players in their lane, certainly causing an annoyance but watching that gold generating creep dying to the other creeps in lane and going no where. While getting player kills is flashy and great for bragging rights, it rarely wins games on it's own, especially early on. Take the time to learn the attack speed of the given character chosen and the animation they have when attacking. The timing of that animation completing and the input of the next action can make or break a player's ability to successfully farm the creep in lane. As a player gets more consistent at getting that last hit in, generating gold, they can add in a mechanic unique to DOTA 2, denial. Similar to last hitting the opposing creep for gold, players can get the last hit on their own creep to prevent the opponent from getting gold themselves! Following the same principles at last hitting the opposing creep, denying a last hit lets the player dominate the lane, and then the game.
